Home For The Holidays Essential Oil Blend that will Remind You of Christmas’ Past!

This wonderful essential oil Home For The Holidays Blend will help get you into the holiday spirit. It’s brings together sweet, warm, spicy scents with some earthy, outdoor scents to remind you of the past, when simple things could cause such joy and happiness.

My mother’s early years were the 1930’s during The Great Depression and following Recession. Being part of a large farming family she couldn’t expect much for Christmas. Yet she recalled Christmas as being a joyful time of the year.

Little things that we take for granted today she and her siblings found pleasure in! The snow covered hills and trees, the pine tree smells, the scent of fires rising from chimneys, and the wonderful smells of special sweets that her Norwegian mother could make so well. Holidays were a time for family and friends to get together and the Depression did not stop this. The sleigh came out in the winter and away they would go in it to meet with family or friends and share what they had at meal times.

Gift giving was not like it is today, where we sometimes go overboard with buying things that sit in cabinets or closets and are soon forgotten. Instead they used creativity in making simple gifts for each other.

The children might get some knit socks, mittens, a scarf, or a hat made by their mother. Their father might give them a wooden whistle, an animal, or a train that he carved out of left over lumber. My mother’s favorite memory was receiving an orange in her homemade Christmas stocking hung by the stove. It was the sticky sweetness and the sharp, sweet citrus smell that she best recalled.

Oranges were a special treat to this far northern farming community where there were no orange trees, and it had to be shipped by train from thousands of miles away.

Can you just imagine all the scents blending together. The smell of just peeled oranges, the burning pine tree branches in the stove, the smells of vanilla, cardamom and ginger spices in the cookies and other goodies made.

I have put together a wonderful blend that brings some of these scents together. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Home For The Holidays Essential Oil Blend

  • 5 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinesis)
  • 3 drops Balsam Fir essential oil (Abies balsamea)
  • 3 drops Cardamom essential oil (Elettaria cardamomum)
  • 2 drops Vanilla Botanical Extract (Vanilla planifolia)
  • 1 drop Ginger Root CO2 essential oil (Zingiber officinale)

  • How to Use a Diffuser

If you want to scent a large room, a diffuser is the best and easiest way to do so.

Essential oils are highly concentrated, so you’ll only need to use a few drops of these essential oils in this Home For The Holiday Blend.

The size of your diffuser will determine how many drops of oils that you’ll use. For example: with a 100 ml diffuser, add just 3 to 5 drops of oils. Use 6-10 drops for a 200 ml diffuser.

For this diffuser blend recipe, create a master blend in an empty glass bottle.

You can double or triple the recipe in the empty bottle if you wish. Then use only the amount of drops recommended for the size of your diffuser.

You should only use your diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. After that, turn it off and give yourself time to rest.

Too much exposure to essential oils can cause headaches, dizziness, eye irritation, or nausea.

You can use an essential oil diffuser two or three times a day in shorter intervals.

    Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are natural, but that does not mean that they are safe for everyone.

Some people can be allergic to oils. Some oils can’t be diffused around dogs, cats, birds, or other pets.

It’s not recommended that you diffuse around children under 2. Some oils can be diffused around children ages 2 to 10.

Be sure to check the recommended children ages for each of the essential oils in this diffuser blend.

Also, check to make sure that the oils are safe for pets and pregnant or nursing women if they will be in the home.

Remember you can leave out an essential oil, or substitute it for a safe one if needed.

  • 1 ounce (30 ml) Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) Astringent
  • 14 drops Home For The Holidays Essential Oil Blend
  • 1 ounce (30 ml) distilled water

  • I make a small, 2 ounce (60 ml), spray so I don’t have to use a preservative in it. This way it is used up within two to three weeks.

It is important to make a fresh one every two to three weeks, whether you have used it all or not. You don’t want a petri dish growing bacteria in your bathroom!

Because some of the essential oils in this blend could be irritating to the skin, I would stay away from making any bath or body products with it.
