Whether you realize it or not your digestive system plays an integral part in your overall health.

Your digestive system break down the food that you eat, releasing nutrients so they can be absorbed by your body. It also helps to protect your body from diseases.

The bacteria that inhabit your digestive tract play a major role in your overall health.

If the harmful bacteria living in your digestive tract gets the upper hand over the good bacteria then all types of problems can develop.

In fact, the imbalance between harmful bacteria and beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract has been linked to a number of health issues.

These diseases range from unhealthy skin, to inflammatory bowel disease and even to diabetes and cancer.

This makes keeping a healthy balance between good and harmful bacteria essential to protecting your overall health.

Ways In Which Bacteria Imbalances Occur

In a normal digestive tract you will find both harmful and good bacteria. Under ideal circumstances the good bacteria or probiotics are able to keep the harmful bacteria in check.

However, when the friendly bacteria in your system become weakened, get destroyed or washed out of your body then there is nothing to keep the growth of harmful bacteria in check.

And when harmful bacteria flourishes your digestive system and your overall health begin to suffer.

There are many things that can result in the weakening or elimination of the good bacteria in your gut.

Here are some of the things that can have a negative impact on the delicate balance between good and bad bacteria.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics may be helpful in fighting infections. But in doing so they also kill off a large number of the good bugs in your system and weaken the remaining ones.

Enemas and Colon Cleansing

Manufacturers of most colon cleansing products try and convince you that colon cleansing is actually good for your digestive health.

This is because they claim that it cleanses out your intestines and colon, washing away the harmful bacteria.

What they don’t tell you is that while these cleansers do wash out some harmful bacteria, they also rid your digestive tract of those helpful bacteria that keep the harmful bacteria in check.

So instead of aiding digestive health most of these cleansers may actually be causing more harm than good.

Certain Illnesses

Certain illnesses may also kill off the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract without doing any damage to the harmful bacteria. Thus disrupting the good bacteria’s ability to keep the harmful bacteria in check.

So How Do Probiotics Help Digestion?

Probiotics help your digestive system by replenishing the depleted good bacteria in your gut.

The only way to protect your digestive system’s health is by making sure that it has enough good bacteria to keep the bad bacteria in check.

You can do that by eating probiotic foods or taking probiotic supplements.

Some of the foods rich in probiotics include:

  • Yogurt
  • Kefir
  • Sauerkraute
  • Pempeh
  • Miso
  • Pickles

Even though I like getting my probiotics from natural foods such as the ones mentioned above, there are also some quality probiotic supplements that do the same job.

It is important to note that these probiotics have a long way to travel to make the journey into your intestines where they are needed.

During this journey, many are killed off and the rest arrive in a fairly weakened condition. This means that even though you are increasing the number of probiotics in your intestine they simply may not be strong enough to defend your body from that harmful bacteria that has been growing stronger and stronger while your healthy bacteria has grown weaker and weaker.

The only real solution to the problem is to not only increase the number of probiotics in your digestive system, but also to increase their strength to make them effective.

Yes Probiotics Do Help Digestion but You Need something Else!

In order to gain strength those probiotics need food. So, giving your body the prebiotics it needs to feed those healthy bacteria is the only real way to get that digestive system back into balance.

Prebiotics are bits of food that are not digested but rather pass through the system where they serve as food for the probiotics.

When the good bacteria in your system get ample amounts of food, they multiply and grow stronger. This helps to restore the balance between good and bad bacteria.

In short, maintaining good digestive health is a matter of not only having ample good bacteria to help keep the harmful bacteria in check.

It is also a matter of seeing that those friendly bacteria get the right food to multiply and remain strong.
