What is Plantar Fasciitis?

On the bottom of your foot, there’s a thick piece of tissue called the plantar fascia that runs from your heel to your toes. When this tissue gets inflamed, it causes what is known as plantar fasciitis.

When your feet and the plantar fascia are exposed to regular pressure and strain from running or even just standing for long periods of time, small tears can happen in the tissue. This can cause inflammation is the tears heal and cause scar tissue.

Plantar fasciitis can cause mild to stabbing pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. The pain is usually worse in the morning and decreases as the day goes on. The pain might be more severe after long periods of standing or sitting.

Plantar fasciitis can affect anyone, but it’s common in runners and overweight people.

Wearing shoes with proper support can help decrease the risk of this uncomfortable condition.

Plantar Fasciitis Foot Soak Recipe (Essential Oil Achy Heel Recipe)

Soaking your feet in Epsom salts can help relieve pain and inflammation naturally. Mix the essential oils with a carrier oil before adding them to the salt so the oils are dispersed in the water better.

Hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil are both anti-inflammatory, but you can use grapeseed, fractionated coconut oil, or other carrier oils.

Ingredients

Essential Oil Combinations to Try

  • 5 drops lavender EO and 4 drops of eucalyptus EO
  • 6 drops lavender EO and 3 drops of peppermint EO
  • 3 drops lavender EO, 3 drops basil EO, and 3 drops bergamot EO (phototoxic – don’t use if going barefoot outdoors or tanning bed in next 18 hours)

Note: Ginger is a hot oil.  If you have sensitive skin you should not use.   I would use no more than 1 or 2 drops in 1 Tablespoon carrier oil and 1/2 cup Epsom salts.  You can mix with 3 or 4 drops of a skin nurturing essential oil such as Roman chamomile, lavender, or helichrysum.  Always do a skin patch test before soaking your feet.  (See my safety sections – listed below)

Directions

Combine the essential oils with the carrier oil. Add that and the Epsom salts to a basin with warm water.

Soak your feet for 20 to 30 minutes. Use twice a day for pain relief.
