Best Essential Oils for Hair Health and Hair Loss to Help with Hair Growth!

Are you losing your hair? Or want to just support your hair health?  If yes, here are some of the best essential oils for hair health that you may find helpful.

Hair loss is one of the biggest reasons many look into finding ways to slow their hair loss, or to keep their scalp healthy for hair growth.  Even though men are more likely to lose their hair, thinning hair and hair loss is also common in women. Hair loss can be disheartening especially for women. Watching my hair fall out and get thinner wasn’t funny at all and I know it is NOT for anyone!

Best essential oils for hair loss

The fact is, there are millions of people out there battling with thinning hair and hair loss, so you are not alone. And you can do something about it.

You can’t just throw your hands up in the air and give up. This is why I decided to write this post on the best essential oils for hair loss and how to use them to stop thinning hair and support healthy hair and hair growth.

It is important to note that our hair goes through a 3-phase cycle. The first is the growth phase. The second is the rest phase and the third is the shedding phase when the hair begins to shed. And then the cycle goes on and on.

So don’t panic if you see a few strands fall off when you comb or brush your hair. It’s all normal. It only becomes a problem when you start losing large chunks of hair, which can lead to bald spots.

There are several factors that cause hair loss or baldness and they include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Stress
  • Heredity
  • Vitamin B deficiency
  • Iron deficiency
  • Chemotherapy
  • Blood thinners
  • Anti-depressants
  • Trichotillomania
  • Anorexia

How Do Essential Oils Work for Improving Healthy Hair?

Essential oils help keep hair healthy by stimulating the scalp and improving blood flow to the hair follicles. This helps to strengthen the follicles, support hair growth, make your hair thicker, and helps reduce hair loss.

Top 5 Essential Oils that Support Hair Growth

#1. Rosemary

Rosemary is my favorite essential oil for improving the health of hair because of its ability to boost cellular generation, thus helping to keep hair healthy and promoting hair growth.

#2. Peppermint

The icy-hot tingling effect of peppermint oil stimulates the scalp and increases blood circulation, which in turn promotes hair growth.

#3. Cedarwood

Cedarwood has the ability to balance oil production in the glands, which helps to stimulate hair growth. It also has antimicrobial properties that help combat dandruff and other factors that contribute to unhealthy hair and hair loss.

#4. Thyme

Thyme is another essential oil that stimulates the scalp, increases blood flow, boosts hair growth and helps prevent hair loss.

#5. Tea Tree

The result of this study shows that tea tree oil is more effective in treating alopecia (hair loss) than minoxidil. Tea tree oil’s antimicrobial properties also help to fight dry scalp and dandruff, providing an environment that stimulates hair growth.

#6. Ginger

Ginger increases circulation, which is helpful for scalp stimulation which helps improve hair health and hair growth.

#7. Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang stimulates sebum production, which helps to keep the scalp and hair moisturized, preventing dry scalp and brittle hair. This, in turn, helps to prevent breakage and hair loss.

Safety First When Using Essential Oils

If you have never used a certain essential oil it is important to do a skin patch test prior to topically using! See my sections on topical use and other essential oil safety concerns:

Add to Your Shampoo

Add 10 drops of rosemary or cedarwood  to your favorite shampoo (choose a natural shampoo that doesn’t contain detergent) in a 4 oz PET plastic bottle.

Shake very well. Shampoo your hair and ensure you massage the shampoo into your scalp, leave on for about 1 minute and wash off.

I suggest rotating the essential oils every two months to prevent your body from getting used to a particular essential oil. This is important because the oil might stop working for you if your body gets used to it.

After using the shampoo with essential oil for 4 months go back to using your regular shampoo without an essential oil for 1 month. Then repeat the process again.

You can also make your own shampoo using the recipe below:

Conclusion

If you are concerned about hair loss it is important to note that hair regrowth takes time.  Essential oils are NOT “magic portion”. You need to be patient and give them time to work. Also try to reduce your stress levels because stress can play into the reason for some to have thinning hair.

You may also find taking a biotin supplement to be helpful.  It is said to be helpful for some with a biotin deficiency!
