Many people take vitamin and mineral supplements hoping that in doing so they can ensure that their bodies have all the vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain good health. The reality is that if you are taking a synthetic vitamin supplement this may not be true. Synthetic vitamins are not the same as natural vitamins that you get when you eat a healthy diet or even the same as taking a natural vitamin supplement and therefore may do little if anything for your health.

Synthetic Vitamins Often Go Unrecognized By Your Body

You may remember that old commercial where the tag line was “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” this saying may be truer than you think when it comes to those synthetic vitamins. While your digestive tract recognizes natural vitamin compounds, the same cannot be said for synthetic vitamins. Not only does your digestive system not process synthetic vitamins as well as those natural vitamin compounds, but your body does not absorb synthetic vitamins in the same way as it does natural vitamins meaning that it isn’t likely that even if those synthetic vitamins proved to be beneficial to your health that you would be getting enough of them to do any good.

In addition, some experts believe that the artificial colors and artificial flavorings added to some synthetic vitamins may actually lead to food sensitivities and other problems which may actually harm rather than improve your health. Other experts suggest that synthetic vitamins may actually deplete your body of other nutrients that your body needs.

Why Going Natural Is Best

The best way of getting the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to maintain health is by eating a healthy diet of foods in each and every food group. Organic fruits, vegetables, and meats are the best sources of vitamins and minerals that are healthy for you. Followed by fresh food sources that may not be organic. However, if diet alone cannot supply you with all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy then choosing to take all natural vitamin supplements is the next best thing to getting those vitamins through the food you eat.

Look for those vitamins and minerals that contain no artificial color or flavorings and are made by a company your trust. You are not likely to find natural vitamins on your grocer’s shelves so take the time to check online or at your local health food store to find vitamins that are all natural. You also want to read the labels to ensure that you are getting the most natural and freshest vitamins available.
