It may surprise you to learn that you may have one of the most dangerous contributing factors to a number of serious and deadly diseases and neither you nor your doctor may know it – Inflammation.
That’s right, chronic inflammation has been linked to such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and even cancer.
In most cases, people are totally unaware that they have chronic inflammation.
And that in a majority of cases doctors don’t test to see if you have chronic inflammation until after you have been diagnosed with a serious condition.
While people who have many colds or injuries may develop chronic inflammation the major source of this problem is poor diet.
One of the leading causes of chronic inflammation is the imbalance between omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids.
Both of these types of fatty acids are necessary to maintain optimum health. However, when the amount of omega 6 fatty acids in your system is far higher than the omega 3 fatty acids inflammation occurs.
Sadly, most people tend to eat diets that are rich in omega 6 fatty acids and poor in omega 3s.
Add to that, diets filled with unhealthy and processed foods, and not enough foods that contain essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients such as anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and you have a recipe for disaster for your health.
Luckily there are several things you can do to help strengthen your immune system and control chronic inflammation.
The best thing you can do is to start with an anti-inflammatory diet. This diet is based on sound nutrition but, limits many of those foods that are high in omega 6s or cause irritation to the body.
While these diets are good and will help to keep that inflammation under control often times these diets simply are not enough.
Most anti- inflammatory diets call for you to add fatty fish to your diet often as much as 3 or 4 times a week.
Most people simply don’t or won’t eat that many helpings of fish. However, what you may or may not realize is that fish and other seafood is the main source of omega 3 fatty acids.
These omega 3 fats are not only essential to maintaining overall good health, but are necessary to help balance the ratio between omega 6s and omega 3s to help prevent chronic inflammation from occurring.
Health experts suggest that the ratio between omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids should be between 1:1 and 4:1 (with omega 6 being higher) and the acceptable ratios are somewhere around 6:1.
However, in most people the ratio of omega 6s compared to omega 3s are way out of proportion reaching ratios as high as 20:1.
If such unhealthy ratios continue for an extended period of time then chronic inflammation results.
If eating those helpings of fatty fish 3 or 4 times a week does not appeal to you then taking a quality fish oil can be an option!
Fish oil supplementation can help to balance your omega 6 and 3 ratios.
Since these supplements provide a variety of other benefits as well, taking them can help improve your overall health as well as fight inflammation.
Choosing a good fish oil supplement from a company that you trust is just one more way that you can be proactive in your health care.
