If you are concerned about eating healthy then chances are you may be worried about your consumption of fats. Most people believe that consuming fats has a negative impact on your health; however that is not the whole truth. While some fats are bad for your health others when consumed in moderation are actually good for you.

Good and Bad Fats

In general, saturated and trans fats should be avoided as much as possible. However, Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats are considered healthy for you when used in moderation. While knowing good fats from bad fats for cooking is easy, it can sometimes be difficult to know which “fatty foods” are healthy for you to consume. So here is a list of healthy fats, and foods containing healthy fats to help you make healthier food choices.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are not only good for your health, they are actually considered to be necessary to maintaining good health. Omega 3 fatty acids are a type of Polyunsaturated fat and are mainly found in fatty fish and to a lesser degree in other seafood such as shrimp. You can also get omega 3 fatty acids by taking fish oil supplements.

Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Omega 6 fatty acids are also necessary to your health and you can get these fats from a variety of sources such as:

  • Organic meat
  • Egg Yolks
  • Various Grains
  • Nuts and nut butter (walnuts, peanuts, almonds)

Most Omega 6 fatty acids are considered to be a type of monounsaturated fats.

Other good sources of healthy fats include:

  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Canola oil
  • Peanut oil
  • Olives
  • Tofu
  • Avocados

Is Vegetable Oil Healthy

There is some dispute about whether vegetable oil should be considered as healthy or not. Pure vegetable oils such as olive oil are considered healthy for you. However, most so called vegetable oils are hydrogenated, which changes these oils from their natural state to a dangerous one. Most medical experts believe that hydrogenated vegetable oils have a detrimental effect on your health.

Which is the Healthier Fat? Butter or Margarine

Although there are people in the health field that will argue that margarine is better for you than butter, this really is not the case. Margarine is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils and contains a number of unhealthy chemicals that are worse than any saturated fat. On the other hand, although butter is considered to be a saturated fat, it actually has many health benefits including:

Butter is the most easily absorbable form of vitamin A and is also a good source of vitamin E and K. Butter contains lauric acid, which can help prevent Candida and fungal infections. It contains anti-cancer properties and has anti-oxidants that can help to defend the body from free radicals.

While it can sometimes be difficult to determine what are good fats and what are bad fats, hopefully this list will prove helpful in helping you to choose foods that are healthier.
