We’ve all become accustomed to hearing about or reading about the new miracle supplement that is superior than anything on the market. Lately there has been a lot of chatter about krill oil and how it is better than fish oil. Even Dr. Oz has jumped on the bandwagon proclaiming the benefits of krill oil over fish oil for your health. But, exactly what are these so called benefits, and do studies actually show that these benefits exist?
What is Krill Oil and Where Does it Come From?
Krill oil is the oil that is rendered from tiny shrimp like crustaceans called Krill that are mainly found in the Southern Ocean and waters off Antarctica. Like fatty fish, shrimp, and other seafood, Krill does contain omega-3 fatty acids and according to current research quite a lot of it. Krill oil also contains an anti-oxidant called astaxanthin, which is one of the reasons why some people are now claiming that krill oil is better than fish oil supplements for your health.
What Do The Studies Say?
The simple truth is that there simply aren’t enough Krill studies that have been done to date to show whether or not Krill oil is superior to fish oil. In fact, so far to date there have only been a few Krill oil studies done involving humans and even fewer directly comparing Krill oil to fish oil. This is significant when you consider the fact that fish oil has been studied for years and its health benefits are well known. The few studies that have been on Krill oil, while positive, simply don’t offer enough information to make an informed decision about the long term benefits of Krill oil.
One study did show that Krill oil can help relieve symptoms and inflammation associated with arthritis, but did not show those benefits to be any better than the benefits derived from fish oil. Another small study did suggest that Krill oil may be better at relieving PMS symptoms, but more studies need to be done to verify that this is indeed true.
There have been no studies done showing that Krill oil is any better or even as good as fish oil for the health of your heart, to help balance mood, to aid in weight loss, or anything else that fish oil supplements are known to be beneficial for. That’s not to say that future studies may not show that Krill oil can benefit these conditions, it simply means at this point in time, no one knows.
In addition, studies on anti-oxidants show that people who eat a healthy diet that consists of fruit and vegetables that are high in anti-oxidants are healthier than those who do not include such foods in their daily diet; there is really no evidence that taking an anti-oxidant in supplement form does you any good at all. In fact, some studies suggest that taking Vitamin A, which is an anti-oxidant in too large of an amount may actually harm your health. So again, at this point in time the fact that Krill oil contains the anti-oxidant astaxanthin doesn’t mean that it is better for your health.
The bottom line is that compared to the thousands of studies that have been done showing just how beneficial fish oil is to your health, there have been just a few studies on Krill oil. Until more studies are done, there is simply no way of knowing whether or not and how much benefit Krill oil can offer you in terms of your health.
Besides the fact that Krill oil has few studies to back up the claims that it is as good or better than fish oil, it also is considerably higher priced. Today’s savvy consumers no longer believe just because a health supplement is high priced that it is good for your health. However, the choice is yours, you can choose to buy Krill oil, which is expensive to use, and has not yet, been proven to have all the health benefits of fish oil, or you can choose a high quality fish oil supplement, which is backed by years and years of scientific proof that these supplements are indeed beneficial to your health.
