Making a healthy smoothie isn’t difficult as long as you have the right blender for the produce you are planning to use. If your smoothies are going to consist of just soft fruits, yogurt and honey or artificial sweeteners then an inexpensive blender will probably do the trick. However, if you are looking to add more leafy greens and hard vegetables to your diet by turning this type of produce into a tasty smoothie, then chances are you are going to want a blender that is appropriate for making green smoothies. The more powerful the blender the smoother those green smoothies will be.

Common Ingredients in Smoothies

Smoothies can pretty much be made out of any fruit and/or vegetables you choose. Some common ingredients for smoothies are:

  • Fruits including berries, apples, pears, peaches, melons, avocados, and bananas
  • Vegetables including carrots, celery, beets, tomatoes, and leafy greens. In fact green smoothies are becoming increasingly popular due to the amount of healthy nutrients these vegetables contain.
  • Spices and herbs including coriander, parsley, wheat grass, garlic, ginger, cinnamon
  • Ice, water, yogurt and fruit juices to liquefy some of the fruits and vegetables.
  • Low calorie sweeteners, honey and maple syrup

Most people begin making smoothies simply with fruits or vegetables that they like and doing a little experimenting until they get the exact flavor they like. However, if you would prefer to make your smoothies by following a recipe there are several recipes to be found. Not only are smoothie recipes scattered all over the Internet, but cookbooks often have a section on making smoothies and there are even entire food book dedicated to making various types of smoothies. Spend a little time collecting those recipes you want to try and you will have plenty of great tasting smoothies to make.

If you like your smoothies ice cold and really thick then try freezing bananas and fruits that you plan on using for your smoothies. These cold fruits act as ice without actually watering down your smoothie. You can also freeze fruit juice as well to help increase the coldness of your finished product.

If you are drinking smoothies to increase your health try using apples or bananas to sweeten green or vegetable smoothies naturally. Apples are the one fruit that mixes well with any vegetable smoothie.

If you want to include more leafy greens into your diet, but find green smoothies unappealing try making a cool carrot, cucumber, and apple smoothie and throwing in a couple of spinach or Kale leaves or a handful of parsley. Over time you can increase the amount of leafy greens in the smoothie as you get more used to the taste.

Smoothies not only make wonderful healthy drinks, they also can serve as something cool and refreshing on a hot day. Since smoothies need very few ingredients and take only minutes to prepare they are the perfect pick me up any time of the day.
