Most people who are trying to lose weight see food as the enemy. However, in many cases eating the right foods at the right time of the day can actually help you to suppress that ravenous appetite and consume less calories without feeling quite so hungry. Here are a few foods that actually can help suppress appetite.
Water is not technically a food, but it is the elixir of life and it is probably the greatest no calorie appetite suppressant in the world. Drinking several glasses of water a day can help keep appetite at bay. Drinking a glass or two of water ½ an hour before meals and another glass with meals can help you feel less hungry and eat less at meal times.
#2. Leafy Green Vegetables
Green leafy vegetables are considered to be negative calorie foods, because you actually burn more calories chewing and digesting these vegetables than the vegetables actually contain. Eating a large helping of these vegetables before meals can help to reduce hunger, resulting in your consuming less calories overall. You can also snack on leafy greens such as lettuce, celery, raw spinach and others between meals to help reduce hunger pangs and get you through until meal time.
While apples do have some calories, they are also high in fiber and pectin and, thus are great natural appetite suppressants. Studies actually show that when overweight women combined eating 3 apples a day with a low calorie meal plan, they lost significantly more weight than women on the same meal plan who did not eat apples. Choosing to eat an apple as a snack between meals can help defeat those hunger pangs until your next meal. Include a glass of water with your apple snack and you will feel full even longer.
#4. Broth Based Soups
Enjoying a broth based soup loaded with low carb vegetables can also help to suppress appetite and result in you eating less of those high calorie foods at meals. You do want to choose a broth based soup that is low in sodium however to keep you from retaining water.
#5. Oatmeal and Eggs
Recent studies suggest that people who eat eggs, which are high in protein for breakfast have more energy and don’t feel hungry fast. In addition, even though oatmeal is high in carbohydrates, they break down slowly in the body helping to keep blood glucose levels on a more even keel. Eating ½ of cup of oatmeal with 1% milk and a couple of eggs for breakfast may keep you full right up until lunch.
While each of these foods has the ability to help suppress appetite, including several of them together may be your best bet on suppressing your appetite all day long and resulting in better weight loss results. Try starting your morning with oatmeal and a couple of soft or hard boiled eggs, drink water throughout the day and then eat a green leafy salad or broth based soup before eating your noon or evening meal to help you feel fuller faster. If you happen to get hungry before meals or before going to bed, enjoy a delicious apple and another glass of water.
