All you need to do is walk down the aisle of any large drug store and you see row after row of dietary supplements that run the gambit from simple vitamin and mineral supplements to those that promise to build muscle and even increase your libido. In addition, we all know someone who seems to take every dietary supplement that comes down the road. It raises the question as to whether the majority of people really need dietary supplements at all and if so, which of these supplements are really beneficial?

The Real Purpose of Dietary Supplements

In order for you to decide if you need a dietary supplement at all, you first need to understand the real purpose of dietary supplements. The truth is the name of these supplements says it all. A dietary supplement really should supplement your diet. In other words, an effective dietary supplement should contain vitamins, mineral, and other nutrients that you need to maintain good health, but for some reason are not getting through diet alone.

If you adhere to healthy diet and eat the right amounts of the right foods to give you all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs to be healthy then the reality is that there would be no needs for dietary supplements. However, even those people who do eat healthy, often don’t eat all the foods they should in the right amounts to give their bodies everything it needs to remain healthy.

Most people are deficient in some vitamins and minerals or nutrients, which could lead to poor health. In other cases, many people today consume diets that consist of highly processed foods, high sugars, and have chemicals and preservatives that may actually help to rob their body of some of the nutrients it needs. So dietary supplements are a way of helping increase those vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are missing from diet alone.

You Don’t Need Every Supplement That Comes On The Market

However, you also need to know that you don’t need every supplement that comes on the market either. Many of the nutritional supplements today really don’t contain any helpful nutrients that will make you healthier and some are just little more that sugar pills designed to lighten your wallet without having any real beneficial effect on your health. Before taking any dietary supplement you should ask yourself “How can this supplement help me get healthy and stay healthy?” If you can’t come up with an answer then chances are that it isn’t a supplement you need to spend your money on.

What Supplements Should You Consider Taking?

The supplements you should consider taking are those that are most likely to be beneficial to your health. In other words, those supplements that supply your body with nutrients it’s needs and may not be getting enough of. Here are a few different types of supplements that depending on your health you might find useful or helpful.

  • Vitamin And Mineral Supplements. Almost everyone has some vitamin or mineral deficiency at one time or another in their lives. So vitamin and mineral supplements can give your body those vitamins and minerals that it needs. However, you should be aware that those synthetic vitamins and minerals are not absorbed by your body in the same manner that natural vitamins and minerals are, so they may not give you the same benefits. If you feel that you need a vitamin and mineral supplement choose one that is all natural, as it will offer you the most health benefits. While you may get some prebiotics through diet alone they usually are not enough to keep your good bacteria flourishing and healthy.

Basically, if you take supplements that supply your body with the vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and prebiotics it needs, you will be able to maintain good health both for you and your pocketbook.
