If you are like most people you probably grew up being told by a family member such as your mother, grandmother, or aunt that fish was good for the brain. Here is a list of several brain foods that can help keep your mind as well as your body healthy.

Blueberries have been linked to reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, which affects memory, but they have also been shown to actually improve memory and the ability to learn. They are perhaps one of the best foods you can eat to maintain a healthy brain.

Fatty Fish

Wild Salmon and Tuna are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown to be important and necessary fats for keeping your brain healthy. Studies have shown that adding healthy amounts of omega 3 to your diet improves both cognitive thinking and concentration. In addition, these fatty acids, elevate your mood, help reduce anxiety and have been used as part of an overall treatment for various mental illnesses and depression.

Oysters

While most people know that raw oysters can help to increase sexual desire, what you may not know is that these shellfish are also good for your brain. Oysters not only contain some omega-3 fatty acids, but also contain selenium, magnesium, and zinc which are all necessary minerals for maintaining good brain health.

Cooked tomatoes release an antioxidant lycopene, which is especially good for your brain’s health, and some experts believe that this antioxidant may well reduce the risk of dementia.

Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Strawberries

Foods that are high in vitamin C are great for keeping your brain healthy. Best of all they taste good and are good for your overall health not just your brain.

Foods High In B Complex Vitamins

Any of the foods that are high in B complex vitamins will help you maintain your brain health. Try adding some of these foods to your daily diet and see how well your thinking improves.

  • Leafy green vegetables especially spinach and kale that contain good sources of iron as well B vitamins. Most people have some iron deficiency and iron is one of the minerals that help to keep your brain working properly.
  • Eggs. Egg yolk contains high amounts of vitamin B and the protein found in eggs helps improve concentration.
  • Nuts are also a good source of B vitamins as well as monounsaturated fats and some fiber.

There are also a number of supplements that can contribute to your brain’s health as well as make up for deficiencies in your diet.

  • Natural vitamin and mineral supplements will give you the vitamins you may be lacking in your diet as well those minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium, and other nutrients that are vital to helping your brain function at its best.
  • Fish oil supplements and green lipped muscle supplements both offer omega-3 fatty acids for those who simply don’t like fish or don’t consume enough fish to get the levels of omega-3 necessary for keeping their mind and body healthy.
