With New Year fast approaching many people have decided to go on a diet and lose weight during the coming year. More than three-fourths of the people who decide to go on a weight loss diet will fail, and for good reason, most weight loss diets don’t work and here are just a few of the reasons why.

Reason One: The Mindset Associated With the Word Diet

Just mention the word diet to most people in the modern world, and the word conjures up images of feeling hunger pangs, eating little more than rabbit food for days on end, and feelings of deprivation. Because most weight loss diets are meant to be a short term solution for those wishing to lose a few pounds for a special occasion, the word diet has come to have a very negative connotation in most people’s minds. The moment that a negative image enters our minds we tend to dwell on that image rather than focusing on something more positive.

In order to successfully lose weight you need to change your mindset and focus on eating healthy and getting healthy exercise. If you do those two things, then you will be more apt to take off those pounds without feeling deprived or hungry.

Reason Two: Most Weight Loss Diets Actually Shock The Body Into Holding Onto Stored Fat

The second reason why most weight loss diets fail is because they shock the body into actually holding on to those stores of fat. When a person goes from consuming 3400 hundred calories a day with little or no exercise to 1400 calories or less a day and adds in intensive exercise, their body is bound to feel as though it is starving itself. It will then go into starvation mode, holding onto its fat reserves, making weight loss extremely slow and difficult.

Most people who lose significant amounts of weight can do so more successfully when they gradually reduce their calorie intake by making healthier food choices that contain less calories. For example, instead of choosing to make a hearty beef stew with all that calorie rich gravy opt for a simple hearty vegetable soup without the gravy. Try substituting a banana, orange, or apple for that fruit filled Danish, or skip a spoonful of sugar in that bowl of oatmeal.

By making just a few simple changes at the beginning of your weight loss plan you can easily cut 500 calories or more from your daily diet without forcing your body to go into shock. Then as your diet progresses, you can further lower your calorie intake and increase the amount of exercise without shocking your body into holding onto those fat stores.

Reason Three: Relying On Processed Diet Foods

Another reason why many weight loss diets don’t work is because those who are dieting rely heavily on processed diet foods for many of their meals. While these foods are convenient and are designed to be low in calories, there are hidden ingredients in them that often add to your weight despite the calorie count. Many diet foods are high in sodium, which can pack on pounds of water weight. They also may contain high fructose corn syrup which if not used immediately, is turned into fat and stored by the body thus increasing those fat stores instead of helping to deplete them. In addition, many of these foods contain additives and preservatives that may actually slow weight loss.

Reason Four: Not Getting The Support You Need

The old saying that “no man is an island” certainly holds true for many people who are trying to lose weight. While some people are successful at going it alone, many people have much more success when they surround themselves with supportive people who help to encourage them to stay the course and take off the weight. Something as simple as having someone who is willing to try out that new healthy and low calorie recipe with you or take an after lunch or dinner walk can help to keep you motivated towards your goal when things get tough. Just having someone notice that your face looks thinner, or that you are looking healthier and more fit can make a big difference to whether or not you are successful when trying to achieve your weight loss goals.

Reason Five: Unrealistic Expectations

One of the biggest reasons why weight loss diets don’t work is that people start these diets with unrealistic expectations. Losing weight and keeping it off is not something that occurs rapidly, but takes place slowly over time. People who tend to want things now often have unrealistic expectations when it comes to the process of losing weight and either give up on their goals or resort to fad diets that promise fast weight loss and end up ruining their health or are impossible to stick to.

For those of you who really want to shed those excess pounds your best chance of success is to focus on eating and exercising in a healthy manner, keeping your expectations within reason, and avoiding processed foods. Having positive supportive can often get you through the more difficult times and keeping a positive attitude and being committed to making a permanent lifestyle change will help you to make the changes necessary to lose that weight and to keep it off.
